How can I make sure my texts get delivered and perform well?

This document provides customers with recommended best practices for setting up and executing successful text messaging campaigns. The goal is to maximize message delivery by avoiding blocks at the aggregator and carrier levels. Adhering to these guidelines will help ensure the effectiveness of your campaigns. The Wonder Cave team developed these recommendations based on direct troubleshooting experience, communications with providers and carriers, and industry trends. While following these best practices does not guarantee 100% message delivery, it significantly improves your success rate.

Message Content Requirements and Best Practices

Opt-Out Language

All campaign messages must include opt-out language. Carriers require clear opt-out instructions, such as: “Reply STOP to opt-out.” Failure to include this language may result in message blocking, phone number suspension, or loss of Grassroots services.

Personalization

Include the recipient’s first name by using {Name} within the message body. This ensures messages are personalized, pulling the first name from the campaign’s contact list.

Banned Words and Forbidden Categories

Avoid using language in forbidden categories. Messages containing prohibited words may be flagged or blocked.

Capitalization and “Urgent” Symbols

Minimize excessive capitalization and symbols (e.g., BREAKING, PLZ HELP, Final attempt to reach you). Filters often flag messages that resemble spam. Reducing these elements improves deliverability.

Identify Sender

Start each message with an introduction, clearly identifying the sender. For committees, specify the individual or campaign being supported through the P2P channel.

Minimize Daily Touchpoints

Limit the number of times you contact a recipient in a single day. Carriers recommend disclosing message frequency in the first contact (e.g., “You will receive X messages today.”).

Text Messaging Tips & Examples

SMS Tips:

  • 160 characters per segment

  • Start Strong – Use an engaging hook to capture attention immediately.

  • Be Concise – Keep messages short and to the point. Brevity is key.

  • Ensure Clarity – Use simple language to make messages easy to understand.

  • Explicit Call-to-Action (CTA) – Make it clear what you want recipients to do.

  • Maintain Compliance – Always include opt-out instructions to build trust and ensure compliance.

MMS Tips:

  • 1,600 characters per segment + image

  • Recommended File Types:

    • Image: JPEG, PNG

    • Video: MP4

  • Maximum File Size: 500 KB (some carriers allow up to 1 MB, but 500 KB is a safe limit)

  • Optimal Length – While MMS allows up to 1,600 characters, messages between 800–1,200 characters perform best.

  • Leverage Links – Include multiple CTA link placements to increase click-through rates.

  • Use Engaging Graphics – Ensure visuals support the message and CTA.

  • Simplify the CTA – Avoid overwhelming recipients with too much visual focus.

  • Engagement Expectations – Recognize that MMS may have slightly lower click-through rates due to visual engagement.
